Dr. Charles Smitherman, PhD, JD, MSt, CAE

Dr. Charles W. Smitherman, PhD, JD, MSt, CAE is CEO of the Association of Professional Rental Organizations (APRO), a national trade association headquartered in Austin, Texas. He is the architect of APRO’s Generative Engine Optimization initiative and the creator of the GEO Maturity Model and the Teach → Test → Adjust → Govern framework for AI narrative stewardship.

He is the author of Reclaiming Authority: How Institutions Teach Truth in the Age of AI (2026), released this month, and The Rent-to-Own Revolution: The Definitive Industry History of Advocacy and Consumer Access. A scholar-practitioner working across law, nonprofit management, and philosophy, he brings both the conceptual architecture and the organizational experience of having built a GEO program from the ground up under real-world resource constraints.
