It is about creating opportunities that help partners connect with the people and priorities that matter to them – while supporting the association’s work and long-term sustainability.

The strongest partnerships rarely come from pressure or a perfectly timed pitch. They grow from understanding what a prospective partner is trying to accomplish, making it easier to see where there is a meaningful fit, and building opportunities that deliver value on both sides. Here are four approaches that can help associations create a stronger pipeline and build durable revenue relationships.

1. Begin with curiosity, not a menu

During your first engagement with a prospective partner, it can be tempting to send the sponsorship menu or point them toward the most familiar package. A more helpful starting point is a conversation about what has brought them to the table.

Association sales consultant and PAR growth coach Lewis Flax of Flax Associates recommends the SCORE framework for sponsor cultivation: situation, changes, objectives/obstacles, other relationships, and envisioning the future.

The framework can help teams learn more about a prospective partner’s current environment, what may be shifting for them, the priorities they are navigating, and what a successful relationship could look like.

Rather than beginning with a solution, explore what has prompted the conversation, the goals the organization hopes to advance, the people involved in the decision, and what a meaningful outcome would look like. That context makes it easier to shape an opportunity around the partner’s needs – and to identify when another path may be a better fit.

2. Make it easy to participate

Even when there is genuine interest, a partnership can lose momentum if the path forward feels cumbersome or unclear. Associations can help by offering focused options, clear expectations, and opportunities that are easy for a partner to understand and share internally.

That might mean presenting two or three relevant ways to engage rather than every available asset. It could also mean creating an experience with a clear purpose, such as a sponsor-supported attendee activity, a research initiative, a limited activation, or an opportunity that helps a partner contribute to the community in a visible way.

For example, an event scavenger hunt or passport-style experience can give exhibitors a practical way to invite attendee interaction. The American Staffing Association charged exhibitors $2,500 for a QR-code placement at their booths where attendees could earn points through the activity.

The value was not simply the QR code. It was the invitation to participate in a larger event experience, create a reason for attendees to visit, and support a more engaging exhibit floor.

As Teri Carden, COO of InsightGuide, an AI-enhanced forum that connects association members with suppliers, explains, “Associations must be able to provide more value so that they can continue to retain those sponsors and those exhibitors.”

When an opportunity is clear and connected to a partner’s goals, the next step is more natural. A simple conversation about who else should be involved, what information would be useful, and when to reconnect can keep the process moving without making it feel transactional.

3. Build around the business need

A booth, logo placement, or webinar sponsorship may be where a conversation begins. It does not have to be where it ends.

Tracie Clemmer, director of corporate relations at the International Downtown Association, describes how a $10,000 event sponsorship grew into a larger partnership once she understood what the company hoped to accomplish over the following 18 to 24 months.

“I could build a multi-year agreement with them that made sense and solved a problem,” Clemmer says.

That is an important shift: moving from a list of available assets to a conversation about what the organization needs most. It may be credibility, market education, research, relationships, employee engagement, or a meaningful way to connect with a particular audience. When a partnership is designed around a shared outcome, it can create stronger value for the partner and a more sustainable foundation for the association.

4. Design opportunities people want to prioritize

Recognition, scarcity, and deadlines can be thoughtful parts of program design when they help partners understand what makes an opportunity meaningful and when participation matters.

Maria Jaba, sales manager/hospital relations manager at the Society of Critical Care Medicine, says, “Recognition creates value beyond the service itself. When organizations can publicly demonstrate excellence through a respected designation or credential, the conversation shifts from cost to strategic differentiation, making decisions easier and often faster.”

Recognition might take the form of a leadership designation, a visible partner role, priority placement, or an opportunity to contribute expertise in a way that serves the community. The recognition should be credible and relevant – not simply another logo placement.

Jaba adds, “Scarcity increases perceived value. When participation is selective and standards are meaningful, organizations are more motivated to act because they recognize that not everyone will have the same opportunity.”

A limited number of executive roundtables, category-specific partnerships, research opportunities, or premium activations can help associations protect the value of their offerings while giving the right partners a meaningful place to participate.

Deadlines can serve a similar purpose. Jaba notes that they help turn interest into action by creating a clear decision point. Thoughtful application windows, enrollment dates, campaign launch schedules, and priority-selection timelines help everyone plan – and help partners understand when they need to make a choice.

As Jaba puts it, “The most successful organizations don’t rely on stronger sales pressure. They design programs that naturally communicate value, exclusivity, and urgency. When recognition, scarcity, and deadlines work together, they create a compelling reason for customers to act.”

Associations that create clear, useful opportunities and give partners meaningful reasons to engage find revenue growth ass a natural outcome of a stronger relationship – not a separate goal.

Learn More at PAR’s RevUP Summit

At PAR’s RevUP Summit 2026, the session “Using Recognition, Scarcity, and Deadlines to Close Faster and Increase Revenue” explores how associations can use these ideas to address stalled sales cycles, budget hesitation, and offers that are difficult to differentiate.

Maria Jaba and Kenneth Klarich of the Society of Critical Care Medicine will share a case-based look at recognition, scarcity, and deadlines in complex sales environments.
